Indian Robin

Image
Indian Robins, commonly known as ' Dev Chakli ' in Gujarati, loves to live in a garden like place, with enough trees and flower beds which could supply it with insects to feed on. It is an insect eater and cleanses our garden by eating pests which normally destroys plants. So with the natural pest control at our hand, please avoid using pesticides and insecticides as that harms them.  The Robins are a beautiful sight. The male bird is black with white stripes on the edge of its wings, while the female bird is brown in colour. These are very agile birds, singing continuously and hopping around with their tails moving up and down looking for insects for their chicks. We are sharing photographs of one such Robin family in our garden with their little chicks.

Red Vented Bulbul

Image
We wake up to the calls of many birds every morning!      One of them, is Bulbul. There are different types of Bulbuls, but the most commonly found in our gardens and backyards are Red Vented Bulbul. All Bulbuls have an iconic crest over their heads, which make them stand out of the rest of the birds.   Bulbuls are noisy and they like to boss around the other little birds to an extent of damaging the other birds' nests and eggs. At times they get into the territorial fight with birds bigger in size fearlessly.   Bulbuls love to eat insects, grains and peck on fruits as well. It is a real taster of fruits, the one it pecks is the sweetest and juiciest of the lot.   We are sharing with you a video of  Bulbul mother and a chick from our school compound.   For more updates register with us on the link given below for the Young Birdwatcher's Club https://forms.gle/h6xXqLwDJmw68JhbA

Purple Sunbird

Image
Purple Sunbird is a beautiful small bird found around our homes, especially where there is a garden or a park in vicinity. You can see it flying from flower to flower and in small bushes to suckle the honey.   That's why it is also known as 'Honey Bird' or 'શક્કરખોર' in Gujarati.  Sunbirds are most active during the spring season and so they are also very important agents of pollination. The male bird is metallic blue-purple with long curved beak. The female is pale green in colour with little copper tint on its head and tail. It has longer tail than the male. You can see the picture of its nest, taken by me in our garden. Also you can listen to the sound it makes in the video with this post.
