Purple Sunbird

Purple Sunbird is a beautiful small bird found around our homes, especially where there is a garden or a park in vicinity. You can see it flying from flower to flower and in small bushes to suckle the honey.   That's why it is also known as 'Honey Bird' or 'શક્કરખોર' in Gujarati.  Sunbirds are most active during the spring season and so they are also very important agents of pollination.

The male bird is metallic blue-purple with long curved beak. The female is pale green in colour with little copper tint on its head and tail. It has longer tail than the male. You can see the picture of its nest, taken by me in our garden. Also you can listen to the sound it makes in the video with this post.
